Professional Biography

Ben is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT), working at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Trafford General Hospitals. He is also Honorary Professor at the University of Salford and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester. Ben was proud to be awarded the prestigious British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) John Anderson award in 2015 which recognises an individual who has contributed to urology in an outstanding or inspirational way.

Ben practices all components of general urology but he has sub-speciality interests in urinary tract (kidney, ureter, bladder) stone management. He is always keen to learn new techniques that can benefit his patients and has performed ‘UK-first’ procedures, on a couple of occasions. As part of Manchester Urology, he offers the full range of therapeutic options for stone disease privately including minimally invasive endourology techniques and shockwave lithotripsy as well as strategies to reduce the risk of further stone formation. He leads the complex stone service and stone multidisciplinary team (MDT) at CMFT and sees patients from across NW England.
He graduated from the University of Manchester and undertook higher surgical training in Manchester and the North West. He has gained further specialist experience at the Cleveland Clinic in the USA and at stone centres in Amsterdam and Turin. An active researcher, with over 30 publications and book chapters to date, he received his research doctorate (MD) from the University of Manchester after an intensive study of prostate stem cell biology at the Christie Hospital.

He is also a qualified educator (PGCert Distinction) and has recently been appointed as interim Training Programme Director for Urology in Manchester with overall responsibility for the quality of trainee urologists’ education in the region. Ben is an invited faculty member on numerous UK instructional courses and has lectured internationally on the management of stone disease. He has been appointed as a global key opinion leader for two large companies providing endourological equipment.

Ben recognises the importance of audit and submits his data to the various stone-related BAUS audits. Also, he leads on audit and governance for the CMFT Urology Department and his current research interests focus on service improvement (patient safety/satisfaction and efficiency), with the ultimate aim of maximising patients' experience.

Ben enjoys spending time with his wife watching their two sons grow up. His playing days are now over but he enjoys watching both rugby and football games and exercises playing squash and running.
